Vietnam - 105 Pieces of Ivory found at Noi Bai International Airport
On 22 April 2016, in the area of cargo terminal ALS, Noi Bai International Airport, the inspection team protecting intellectual property rights (Team 4), the Anti-Smuggling Investigation Department (Customs Department) in coordination with the Departments of Customs at Noi Bai international airport, Hanoi Customs Department raided two shipments and seized 105 ivory pieces, weighing more than 97kg.
Earlier on, after several days of verification, investigation, Customs Enforcement (Team 4) discovered two parcels, weighing 102kg in a TURKISH Airline flight TK 6562 to Noi Bai international airport dated 6- April-2016 which they suspected of being prohi**d goods.
The customs officials organized screening and on-screen display of the scanned goods showed that the 2 parcels contained ivory.
In the morning of 22 April, Team 4 in coordination with Customs Branch Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi Customs Department) ordered the examination of the shipment to further assess the contents. Through inspection, customs forces detected, 2 cartons of goods, within 2 suitcases containing a total of 105 pieces of ivory (various sizes), with a total weight of 97,8kg.
Soon after, the forces were coordinating functions with the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) sampling inspection; there are grounds to continue treatment.
